Legal Expert Speaks at I.T Security Seminar

London, 13 March 2006 - An area often overlooked in the implementation of an organisation’s IT security infrastructure is that of the legal consequences of a security incident. Often the decision process around I.T security is driven by expediency such as a virus scare or through the selection of a vendor’s security product.

However, organisations that have adopted a best practice approach to I.T security usually follow a framework such as COBIT or BS7799. As part of this approach, all the major drivers for I.T security will be examined, especially the legal issues. The correct level of security can then be determined and tailored to meet the organisation’s needs.

Tim Cook
It is common for Tim Cook of Taylor Walton Solicitors to be called upon by clients to provide the specialist advice required to navigate around the multitude of regulatory and legislative demands that exist today. As an associate member of the Society for Computers and Law, Mr Cook devotes a great deal of his time matching the ever changing threats to I.T security with the legal obligation facing organisations in the UK. "Implementing strong IT Security is not only good business practice, it is also required by UK law”, states Mr Cook. “Businesses that fail to comply with minimum security requirements may face enforcement action by the UK Government."

Mr Cook will join other subject matter specialists on Thursday 16th March 2006 at a seminar on the legal implications of security failure. Attendees of the event can expect to receive a solid overview of the issues and successful approaches to I.T security that they can avail of.

Speaking about the event, Kieran Archer, Managing Director of Calyx UK said, “Security has to be seen in the context of the threats to the business, not just I.T hardware. None of our customers could possibly contemplate a major security failure. This seminar will give people a view of what they are obliged to do legally and will place I.T security firmly at the heart of this strategy.

Also speaking at the event will be security specialist firms BlueCoat and Array Networks, identity management specialists Swivel and security Policy Communication software developers, Baronscourt Technology.

"Experts estimate the process of writing IT Security Policies can take 3 -6 months, with no guarantees that policies will continue to cover all aspects of the changing regulations that govern IT security."
